The Potworowski
The Piotr Potworowski Foundation is dedicated to celebrating the life and work of the artist Piotr Potworowski, while championing the transformative power of art created by refugee and displaced artists worldwide. In the spirit of Potworowski’s legacy - an artist who bridged cultures and endured displacement - we believe that art has the power to transcend boundaries, foster understanding, and highlight resilience in the face of adversity.
By supporting both the preservation of Potworowski’s work and the growth of contemporary refugee artists, we aim to inspire future generations, create pathways for artistic voices in exile, and strengthen the cultural fabric that binds us all.
Rediscovering Potworowski
An artist beyond borders

Potworowski spent a large portion of his life as a lecturer and Artistic educator, both in Britain and Poland. By all accounts, he had an extraordinary ability for bringing out the creative potential of his students. He pushed them, whether at Corsham Court or at the University of Poznan, to paint in the most innocent approach. He urged them to allow themselves an adventure of discovery and an exploration of the unknown. A piece of art, he said, must always be an invitation to the imagination of the beholder, it must never try to communicate anything except through imagination. So that each time we look, the space and the objects are rediscovered afresh.
Piotr Potworowski (1898-1962), was a man able to withstand the horrors of war, displacement, and internal struggle. He experienced the rich turmoil of modernity on the continent and the fertile longing for avant-garde art in post-war Britain.
